Paris Was Just Alright

Paris, trip

Paris has good food, some pretty iconic buildings and a whole host of activities for all different kinds of travellers. There is much to see, do and enjoy as is the case with many other places in the world.

It did not ‘wow’ me as I was expecting. I have read about the enchanting beauty of Paris. I have seen it portrayed on different movies. I have experienced it vicariously through other bloggers and vloggers. I decided that Paris would be the piece de resistance on my month exploring a few European cities. I saved the best for last and that was where Paris was placed on my itinerary.

Paris, trip

I enjoyed many sites over the week I was there. Of course I went to Chateau de Versailles and it is worth spending a day there being immersed in rich history. I studied European History when I did A Levels so this was a treat. The grounds are lovely as well. This was the highlight of my week.

I of course went to check out the Eiffel Tower and it was indeed beautiful especially at night. I did not expect it to be so dusty there and the wind kicked up the dust over and over again. There went my idyllic experience. Some iconic places are sure on my bucket list. I am a big fan of doing touristy things when I travel as well as finding other unique experiences.

Paris, tripMy trip to Paris of course took me to The Notre Dame Cathedral as well. The edifice is wonderful and the craftsmanship is exquisite. I had greater expectations of the decor inside. After experiencing the wonderful tapestry of art work and such in other churches I visited in other European countries I was a bit disappointed. Again, I had pushed my expectation way too high. Who knows, maybe I should have made this the first stop of my trip.

Paris, trip

One day I went up the hill to see Sacre Coeur Basilica. It is majestic and worth visiting – something everybody does on a trip to Paris as you can see in the picture above. By this time I had seen my fair share of wonderfully crafted churches all over other places in Europe. I came to realise that these structures in Paris are in the same class as those in other places in Europe. I started asking myself why people over exaggerate those in Paris over others.

Paris is on many traveller’s bucket list because its reputation precedes it. People wax eloquently about it using nothing but superlatives. Paris is just alright in my opinion. It is not more majestic than many other cities in Europe. This is my unpopular opinion backed by my experience there.

Paris, trip

It was a dream come true to visit The Louvre but there was one section that reminded me so much of a section, I had spent much time exploring at The National Museum of Egypt, in Cairo. I guess it was a sign that I had been to enough museums. I do love me some artefacts though. I also like that shot that I got living life and finally being at The Louvre.

I want to share my true impressions of the places I visit so I just had to voice this as I reflected on my trip to Paris. I heard someone excitedly going on and on about an upcoming trip there and it triggered my memory. I do hope it lives up to their expectations. I hope to check out other less popular places in France in my travels to experience another side of what it has to offer.

These are my thoughts on my experience in Paris. Take it with a grain of salt and know we all have different likes and dislikes. Have you visited Paris? Did it live up to or exceed your expectations?

Check out these too...

  1. Love your article ! I lived there for two years. I agree with you indeed. I think everyone experiences it on its own way! But Paris remains a box to “check” on the bucketlist, right !? 🙂

    1. Yes, it is a box to tick indeed. It must have been a great place to live since you could discover and enjoy all the non touristy things.

  2. Thanks for sharing your Paris experience. I haven’t been there though, and like you, I have read about how pretty it is. Personally, I prefer going to less “touristy” places. It gives me a better perspective of the culture of the place, plus of course, it gives me a chance to dine with the locals and experience real, authentic culinary delights at a more affordable price. 🙂

    1. You are right, Paris doesn’t offer this but you know we get sucked in by the wonderful reviews and want to experience the same. Yes, getting off the tourist path is the best way to go.

  3. It’s funny, I feel the same way about Paris. I was only there on a daytrip when we stayed in London, so didn’t have a lot of time to explore. But it didn’t wow me. I feel like I’ve “been there, done that” and would rather go see other places now.

  4. I visited Paris several years ago and although I enjoyed it I agree with you that it’s reputation may be slightly over rated.

    1. I know some people really enjoy it so much has to do with personal preference and one’s travel history and so on.

  5. I’m one of those people who LOVED Paris, but I can totally appreciate your take on it too. Some things are hyped up far too much, which mostly happens for me with movies. The burn out you can experience for sights to see while traveling is so real! I recently came back from Greece. My original itinerary included seeing quite a few ruins, but after the first three, I had to take the rest out. Ruins were ruins at that point.

  6. I wonder if people love Paris so much because of experiences they have there when staying for a long time or living there. I don’t like places that are super touristy.

    1. That is a really good point. I do think some of its reputation comes from the many romantic movies with scenes there as well.

  7. I like how you put your real experiences and opinions in it. The pictures look beautiful by the way. Also I agree with just exploring on your own.

    1. Thank you, i want to make it clear that these are my thoughts and others may enjoy it by visitng and having their own experiences.

  8. Paris is definitely one of those places I haven’t visited and would like to. I’m not really sure what expectations I place on it though. I do tend to like places that are a little less busy.

  9. I have never been to Paris but hope to someday. I enjoyed reading about your experience and i can totally relate to your experience.

  10. Looks like such an amazing time in Paris. It’s definitely one of those places I hope to go to someday. I would love the Louvre whether I have been to too many museums or not. 🙂

  11. I have a lot of family in Paris and would love to go back someday soon!! If you’re ever back in France I suggest going to one of the beach towns like Biarritz!! so beautiful! 🙂

  12. I went to Paris & Versailles for a long weekend and left with really similar feelings. Versailles was my absolute favorite and I would love to go back there, but going back to Paris is not at the top of my list.

  13. I’ve been to Paris many times, and absolutely adore it. However, I know exactly what you mean. Everybody reacts differently to places and sometimes, one just doesn’t click! It happened to me recently on my very first vist to Romania. The people were great. The food was interesting. It just didn’t wow me! Do tell me what you think. Here’s the link:

    1. You articulated it well. It is not and to explain and it doesn’t mean it’s not a lovely city. Romania, that’s another country I really want to explore. Let me read and share my thoughts.
